Research in Motion said Thursday it has asked the courts to intervene to help resolve an impasse that's developed with NTP Inc. over the settlement of a patent dispute over RIM's BlackBerry wireless device. RIM reached a settlement with NTP in March and agreed to pay the Virginia-based patent holding company $450 million US. An appeals court had ruled that RIM had infringed on patents held by NTP. As part of the settlement agreement, RIM and its customers would get "an unfettered right to continue its BlackBerry-related wireless business without further interference from NTP or its patents."
