The FDA has announced Lappert's Ice Cream, Inc. of Richmond, California, is recalling all of its 8-ounce, pint, 1.5-gallon and 3-gallon packages of ice cream (all flavors) because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, listeria infections can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. So far, no illnesses have been reported.
