NEW DELHI: American surgeon Dr Benjamin Carson of Johns Hopkins Institute on Tuesday pronounced here that a surgery was possible to give the 10-yearold twins separate lives with minimal loss of blood. Unravelling the complicated conjoined nature of the twins was a difficult task it took invasive tests, angiograms, 64 slide CT scans, MRI reports and an MR venogram by a team of 21 experts from Indraprastha Apollo Hospital under the guidance of Dr Carson. Said Dr Carson: "The Bijani twins, who were successfully separated, died 90 minutes apart due to massive blood loss. Sabah and Farah’s case is similar but not as severe as the Bijanis. The most critical stage would be recreating the main blood vessel that both the sisters share".

Conjoined twins occur roughly once in every 50,000 births and only few are born alive. For twins who undergo surgery, one or both often die after the operation and the rate of survival beyond the age of two is just 20%...

Dr Anupam Sibbal, director, medical services, Apollo, said: "The surgery is possible. The real challenge will be to create a vascular supply or brain circulatory systems and separate them with minimal bleeding....
