SEOUL Two junior scientists at South Korea's pioneer cloning laboratory donated eggs for its work, researchers familiar with the research asserted in interviews Wednesday, lending credence to an allegation at the heart of a trans-Pacific controversy over the methods employed by the South Korean team. But the lead scientist, Hwang Woo Suk, whose groundbreaking work has made him a national hero in South Korea, did not know about the donations until after the scientific journal Nature first raised that possibility over a year ago, the researchers said.
