ACCUSED drug smuggler Tony Mokbel was arrested with nearly $40,000 in cash just six days after telling a court taxpayers would have to fund his defence. Mokbel, 40, told the Supreme Court on October 19 he would seek legal aid because he couldn't pay his lawyers. When Federal Police arrested the property developer six days later, he was carrying a bag containing almost $40,000 in cash and six mobile phones. "He clearly has access to reserves of money. It is not everybody who walks around with $40,000 of cash in their bag," prosecutor Gavin Meredith said, in opposing bail. Mokbel's estimated $20 million worth of properties, businesses and luxury cars are frozen by court order.
His apparent lack of assets haven't stopped him from taking expensive Queensland holidays.
