Worldwide server sales increased 8.1 percent in the third quarter, the 10th straight advance, as demand increased for computers that run corporate networks and Web sites, researcher IDC said. International Business Machines Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc. remained the top server makers and expanded sales and market share, Framingham, Massachusetts-based IDC said in a statement. Sales at Sun Microsystems Inc., ranked No. 4, fell 7.6 percent. Growth topped IDC's forecast of 6 percent, pushing sales to $12.5 billion, as customers turned to new technologies such as ``virtualization,'' which allows even low-cost servers to run multiple operating systems and different software. Such machines are gaining ground because they let customers get more use out of their hardware, said IDC analyst Matt Eastwood.
