Torrent Typhoon: new torrents search engine
Posted on Thursday, April 28 @ W. Europe Daylight Time

A new web site has emerged (April 18, 2005) dubbing itself Torrent Typhoon. According to its WikiPedia entry, Torrent Typhoon is much like Google in that it pools together the results for searches off of major Torrent sites and displays them in its own table.

Currently, Torrent Typhoon accesses 5 web sites, letting it search over 320,000 torrents. It still is in Beta but the only big bug is that it can't pull results off of more than one page if the web site returns paged results. According to the creator, this will be fixed in time.

Torrent Typhoon is the most advanced BitTorrent search engine developed (so it says, but it isn't too hard to believe if you've used it) and is by far one of the most easiest to use in my opinion. Not only that, but it seems to be entirely legal since it doesn't use any other site's source code. It's true enough that people use BT for illegal things, but the web site itself isn't illegal.

Another interesting thing according to the Wiki entry is that dial-up users benefit off of the site. It claims that since the search results are pulled from the target sites by the server (and thus the server's speed) that dial-up users receive more results in less time.

Also, since wait times can range from 10-30 seconds on my cable modem, it provides a neat little "Seeking" page so you aren't left in the dark as to whether it's searching or not. Another useful item they provide is a FireFox search plug-in. And if that weren't enough, the creator even provided a video tutorial on the Support page on how to use BitTorrent.

One other less-known tidbit is that it was coded by a 17 year old web developer in the time frame of 3 days (but development still continues as one notices if they visit a few times), wow. (Source: his DeviantArt user page)
